We have recieved some much needed rain after a long dry spell. Most of the systems have bumped and the fishing as picked up. The season is just getting going. Time to start keeping tabs on river levels and getting after it.

Deschutes:
Pelton to the Northern Reservation boundary is closed for trout and steelhead. It is open year round below that. Winter trout fishing (Maupin area) can be good and the crowds are long gone. Mostly nymphing with some Blue Wing Olives and midges present. Look to soft seams and eddies for potential dry action.

The clock is ticking on Pelton to Northern Reservation boundary is closed for trout and will close for steelhead December 31. Matt is on Trout Creek and down as we speak and will have a fresh update. Temps are 45 and below, so bust out the tips. Watch hanging up too much and not being able to swing into soft stuff. As temps cool and fish move less ( stacking, they won't spawn till Feb-March) some of the softer water seems to fish. Some fish still being picked up lower (Maupin) as well. Seems day to day, as less fish are showing up runs won't or don't seem to "reset" as fast as October or November. Still some time left and not all the fish are dark tomatoes.
Great place for a turkey dinner and the weather was fantastic. If we keep this weather get out there. Fishing is fair. We found 2-4 a day. Not too bad, still covering and working a ton for your shots on a swung fly. Pretty much commited to tips and leechy look. Mostly swung Bantams, Hosers ( I trimmed back the underwing to lessen the bulk), and marabou tubes. The clock is ticking, if any one is into late season camping, we are in. Give a call if you need to give it a shot.

For those trout chasers, saw plenty of BWO most mid days and some of the eddies and soft spots had quite a few heads poking up..... Open year round Northern Boundary of Reservation to the mouth (Maupin).

Cover water, keep the faith and keep at it.
Trout: Fishing has been pretty good or those not interested in the steelhead hype. Mostly nymphing, but some opportuntites for dry if the mayflies pop and some caddis. More day to day on the dry action, but the nymphing has been pretty darn good. Trout closes Pelton dam to the Northern reservation boundary October 31. If this is your prefered zone to harrass trout, get your last licks in before it is shut down.

Keep looking for good numbers of BWO and other mays on the cloudier days ( some eddies have been real decent) and there are some caddis kicking around ( sparkle pupas did well) on the warmer days.

Steel. Fishing has been midiocore. Not horrible, not red hot. Steelheading, couple shots a day, some days better, some more work. Fishing on the upper end should continue to improve as numbers increase. We just did a little trout fishing, and it was pretty good, and really fun. fish are fat, chunky and looking great. Mostly nymphing, a stone or October caddis pupa ( bonus steel anyone), and a size 18 pheasant tail, hares ear or other mayflysih pattern was working. Looked like some fish still working eddies and a few scatterd risers, but we stuck to meat and potatoes nymph work.

Steelhead: Fall weather is in the air and steel are spreading out and providing opportunity through out the river. Little light on numbers Warm Springs way, but a few around. Lower on Trout to Maupin has been more consistent. Changing everyday. Approaching prime time river wide. Weather, good side light and some cooling and clouds should help. Swing away and enjoy.

A great time to just go fishing and see what happens.

Steelhead: Scattered reports of a few hooked as far up as Warm Springs, but the bulk of the fish would be below and on thier way. The Trout Creek to Maupin as fish around, but the lower you get the more consistent.

Recorded:

0 ° F

Fishing: Good

Trout: Tail end of summer and moving into fall. Still nice weather, not a lot of trout crowds, nights getting a little cooler with a hint of fall knocking on the door. Fishing is decent. Not red hot. Seems to be picking up compared to August conditions. At least a some what consistent "not too bad" with some "pretty good" mixed in. Mostly a Nymphing show. Decent number of bugs ( caddis, October caddis, small PMDs, some PEDs, BWO, crane flies, midges, and BWO), but have not noticed a lot of solid dry fly action.

Nymphing little bugs ( pheasant tails, Hogan Lil Bastard, Military Mays, Ice Nymphs, Zebras) either two little guys or one one big stone or October cadddis pupa and a little buddy side kick as the drop has been the look.

Trout are in good shape. As we hit fall fishing should get even better. Most of the pressure is geared to big brother steelhead, so for trout purists enjoy the end of trout season with the river and trout to yourself.

Steelhead: Most of the action is still on the lower. Below Maupin even. Water temps look good ( low 60s at Moody in the mornings). Numbers are fair to average. Might be a little late. Look to see action move up river soon. It has been more typical steelheading. Steelheading can always be a lot of work and hours to pick up your fish. You head out the door every day wondering if it will be the "big day". There has been some good days out there, and the only way to know is to go. We are just getting into the middle innings with a LOT of fishing ahead of us. Best to start gearing up and get after it. Dates still available and if you chase or wait for reports you'll miss it. If you want to steelhead......go. I almost like years that reports are mixed. Less pressure. If you get a shot at good water with less people you don't always need record numbers to have great days. The steelhead are there, and they will come, swing away.

Yes still hatches, yes still opportuntiy for dry, just not lights out. As size and quantity diminish look for fish working spent caddis, midges and may spinners. Late summer early fall means rolling with the punches and trying to adapt day to day and even hour to hour. Crowds are low, trout are there.

Steelhead: Things are picking up! Counts improve and the water temps are great ( see home page, there is CFS and water temps for Upper and Lower River ) 61-62 at Moody in the mornings. That is what we need for some incentive to take a hard right off the Columbia and dog pile on in. Most of the heavy action as of now seems to be on the way lower end, but look for things to improve further up each and every day. Time for steelhead.

It feels like summer showed up, what the heck huh? At least we had a week of July in July. Caddis where around in decent numbers, when it was still the dry fished well. In between nymphing was good. Fun week. We will see how long it continues. Hopefully the bugs haven't slowly sputtere out. This first week of August or so could fish well. Traffic has been light, minus the rafters. Great time to kick it, slow down and enjoy the canyon and summer time troutin'!

Steel: The counts over the Dalles has picked up, good news. Reports of a cool Columbia are not helping as there is less incentive for bonus fish and/or our fish to nose on in. Just got back from three days down low, it was pretty slow. Fish are around and a handful where hooked, but far from red hot at the moment. When the sleds with the side planers weren't killing it ( did not see one other anlger bent, doesn't mean we didn't miss it), leads you to believe there might not be a ton of steel in the ditch at the moment. That is early steel. One hold wild early fish is woth it though, and the chance to crush is always worth pushing the chips all in.

We just came off of some stable summer weather and it fished like July should fish. The week prior was ok, but a little tougher. Stability is what we are looking for. When the hatches are consistent and the fish can hit a steady pattern the banks will have fish up and working. Hopefully we can squeak a couple more days of summer out of this weather pattern and keep the caddis, fish and us happy.

Hearing some more rumors on the street of some steel being picked up down low, but nothing ripping as of late. Looks like the numbers are starting to catch up a bit. It is about that time to start thinking and making plans. After this next week of trout trips, hopefully we can recon. Fising has been good lately and we are diving into caddis action. Dry fly fishing has been good when steady warm, mellow wind days have come together.

Recorded:

0 ° F

Fishing: Good

Just got back from a trip Trout Creek to Harpham. Nymphing big bugs the first two days was the way to go. River still a little big and dirtier than normal Deschutes color. Riffles and little calm pockets worked. Didn't see a much for mayfly action, pretty scattered and not much looking. But we started to see the random adult salmon fly and some fresh nymph shucks on the grass. By the time we got closer to Maupin there where a fair to decent number of salmon flies and goldens. It took covering a lot of water, but we did find scattered pockets of fish up and willing to take a big dry. Perfect, sure missed seeing those big dry fly snarfs, super fun. Looks like the fun is just starting for the Salmon fly hatch. We where down just a couple days before that (see last report), and we saw hardly an adult one and few nymph shucks, just started. Time to get serious. We have very limited dates like 8, between now and late June. If you want a salmon fly trip, book now. Starting to plan summertime fun, July is amazing on the Deschutes.
